Event Over – Here’s the REPLAY ↓↓↓↓↓
Hi There
So… rapid ‘inductions’! A curious topic (not least because this is the Hypnosis WITHOUT Trance blog… but see the video below for further explanation) in that for many, Rapids are seen as something of a ‘Holy Grail’ of hypnosis – something almost mythical that one attains only when one reaches the highest levels of the art! And it’s easy to see why – because there is something apparently magical about a well executed rapid induction, isn’t there?
One moment a person is in a wide awake, everyday state of consciousness, and the next they very suddenly appear to be in a profoundly altered state.
And it happens just like that! Magical
Now, partly due of the perception of this ‘magic’ and partly due to misunderstandings about how hypnosis actually works (again see the vid below), many people assume that rapids must be difficult things to do, but the truth is that really needn’t be so:
When you know what you are doing and you understand how hypnosis really works, rapid inductions can become one of the easiest pieces of hypnosis to do!
So where are you with regard to your skill with rapid inductions? Would you like to make them easier to do?
On Wednesday 14th I will be running a free mini ‘virtual seminar’ outlining some tips and tricks for making rapids easier to perform and answering your questions about rapids and how to approach and utilise them from an HWT perspective.
If you would like to join me you are more than welcome, and also, please do submit any questions you would like to have answered via this event:

November 6, 2012Nice video James, very clear. I feel that ‘getting’ HWT is crucial for effective modern hypnosis. I came across a wonderful rapid induction in Somerset Maughms ‘The Razors Edge’ at around page 100 or so where a mans headache gets relieved. There is a great bit of credit and empowerment in the piece too.. Keep up the super work!

November 11, 2012I’ll have to check that out Andy! Thanks for the tip off 🙂
Hope you are keeping well!

P.S. Really I’m a guitarist more than a bass player!

November 15, 2012Hi James, I was really excited to listen to this podcast. Unfortunately i was only able to listen to a few minutes of it. Will you be putting it up again for people to listen to?

November 15, 2012Hi James
Always interesting
Thanks for the mention & answers.
I stopped about 5 minutes before the end & caught the rest this morning.
The real learnings I take are
1. The need to setup expectations
2. To maintain congruency with expectations
3. Experiencer v reality checker & dealing with them
It brings to mind some of the techniques of cold reading. Whatever happens ” that’s right”, you just fork differently but it confirms your prediction.

November 15, 2012Thanks for the synopsis John – very useful!
There are a lot of skills from cold reading that can be made use of in a hypnosis context. generally speaking, good cold readers are far more adept at utilisation than most hypnotists!

November 15, 2012Full of information a great webinar James. You said at one point that you had something to say on arm pull rapid induction but didn’t come back to that point. I presume it was about safety and not dislocating arms . . . or have I guessed wrong?
admin
November 15, 2012Yes Chris!
The point was about being clear about health and safety (check for shoulder and back injury first), and also how to do the pull so as it has a useful effect without being unsettling or potentially harmful – go for either a light, rapid but gentle pulse OR a fluid ‘lazy’ pull.
Thanks for the reminder on that Chris!

November 15, 2012Good podcast James. Now I’ve got to get out of the habit of saying go deeper deeper deeper… I understand your reasoning and it makes sense.
What is your description of waking hypnosis?

November 15, 2012Hi James, interesting concept of experiencer versus reality checker. At some point ion the webinar you mention some books or other sources to check but could not understand the references. If you could provide them in written form this would help a lot.
Thanks in advance

November 16, 2012Hola James,
really enjoyed the seminar. I like the way you are putting out refinements to your core philosophy and work. Once the foundations are solid, these little adjustments and grander frames are immensely useful for me so I can embody a holistic expression of this approach.
Hope to see you in Melbourne again soon.
Ham.

November 16, 2012Thanks James, that was a great seminar. It clarified quite some things for me.
Many thanks for all your work.

November 16, 2012In re-listening to the podcast you use the word ‘state’ as in “alter your state in a pleasant way” when speaking to the hypnotee.
In the USA I don’t believe a regular person would have a clear understanding as to what this means. We use the expression ‘state of mind’ but not ‘alter your state’ in usual conversation. Of course I could make a point of explaining it to the client beforehand but I suspect there’s an easier way to express the same thing.
If you agree with me, what other instruction might you suggest?
David Saville
November 16, 2012Great seminar James.
As always, you shared so much of your expertise and working theories that is very useful on a practical level.
If I was to sum up what I take from it so far, it is this: to take more time to deliver a solid preframe; to continually pay close attention to the responses; and to be direct with communicating what is happening in the moment, whether they are following my lead or choosing their own path.
Thank you.
David Saville
November 16, 2012I neglected to mention the most important part: to act on the information that the responses provide!

November 19, 2012Hey James,
Any chance of a Hypnosis Without Trance book? I love your audio material, and it’d be fantastic to be able to have the same thing available to read – plus to cater for those who prefer seeing information to hearing it. Let me know.

November 27, 2012Hi Loz
There will be a book happening at some point, but it may be six months or so (it’s a challenge getting the time to work on it!)

November 27, 2012Hi James, Did you consider my question above regarding using the term ‘alter your state’ ? Or do you find this is not an issue and folks tend to understand what you mean without explaining? G

December 3, 2012James,
When you test for green / red flags, ‘what kind of flags are those flags’?
admin
December 4, 2012Hi Colin
Nice question! 😉
Flag testing is a concept discussed in detail as part of the Hypnosis Mastery Programme.
Essentially, it is the idea of monitoring responses and evaluating them in terms of how effectively the client/’subject’ is flowing with the process.
Regarding what to look for, specifically? That is a subject that would need at least a blog-post of it’s own. I’ll put it on the list for future posts and no-doubt get to it at some point. Until then, I would definitely recommend the Hypnosis Mastery Programme as the best resource to learn about this.

December 30, 2012James, how did you start practising rapid inductions….I’m hesitant about it…your experience will help…
admin
January 3, 2013Hi Chimanrao…
In the words of’Nike’… just do it!
I am just editing up the footage from the Rapid Induction Rituals workshop now. One of the ideas I talk about is detaching from the outcome of ‘hypnotisisng’ and orientating to the outcome of ‘exploring’. Start playing with bits and finding out what happens. You can even pre-frame with something like:
“It would be really great if you could help me out with something I’m exploring/researching etc. at the moment. It’s related to hypnosis, but there is no obligation for you to go into hypnosis at all. If you could help me out, that would be great. And there is nothing weird or or too far out going to happen. All I need for you do do is follow my directions and notice whatever you notice.”
Then you proceed with the process/experimenting, paying attention to what happens as you do (moment-by-moment attention).
Hope that helps

December 30, 2012That is great seminar…you mentioned Ericksons confusion technique…can you talk about it’s dynamics and mechanism..I find it very fascinating and cool…
