“Brilliant and revolutionary! Hypnosis Without Trance has totally changed the way I look at things…”

Alan Whitton – Hypnotherapist and NLP Coach, creator of Fighter’s Mind

“This material has taught me more about Hypnosis than my previous 20 years in Psychology and 4 years as a practicing Hypnotherapist.  Hypnotherapists are sometimes very scathing of this stuff,  perhaps scared at what they might accomplish!  This material should be a standard requirement for ANY Hypnotist wanting to bring about real change work.  Everything is demonstrated without anything held back and explained in finest detail,  to satisfy all learning styles.  If you don’t learn this stuff you will be left behind!”

Michael Skirving – DNLP, DHyp, LAPHP West Mids

“If you are looking for a practical no B.S. guide to elicit hypnotic phenomena then do yourself (and your clients) a favour and check out James Tripp’s Hypnosis Without Trance program.

I have worked professionally as an agent of change for twelve years, done thousands of client sessions and read several hundred books on psychology , nlp and hypnosis. Relatively seldom do I get my hands on a product that actually delivers something new , exciting and useful for an ‘old’ pro as myself.

James gave me several useful nuances (including a new way of eliciting amnesia) that I am using in my daily work, and his ideas have inspired me to develop some useful modifications, experiments and techniques of my own.

This is the first product I have ever endorsed or recommended and James didn’t even ask me to do it .

For the beginner I can’t think of a more useful and comprehensive product for the purpose of learning to elicit hypnotic phenomena .

Strongly recommended.”

Jørgen Rasmussen – Author of Provocative Hypnosis (From a Review on NLP Connections)

“A superb and well developed approach – the most impressive I’ve ever seen!”

Robert Whittington – Hypnotist and Hypnotherapist

“James is now running courses in the UK on his no trance hypnosis work. I thoroughly recommend spending some time in his company. He knows many things, has the flexibility of an NLPer (a good one) the intent of a hypnotist (a good one) and the manners of a true gent.

He will bend you in two with his mind.”

Anthony Jacquin – Hypnotist, Hypnosis Trainer, author of Reality is Plastic and creator of The Manchurian Approach

“James, James, James …

I want to let you know how much I appreciate your work. I am an NLP and Hypnosis Trainer (US and UK) with a 30 year history in the field, and quite frankly, when I look around the “academic and professional hypnosis community”, I see more bullshit than substance.

It is refreshing to see you at your art… and your great language utilization is as natural as it is effective. You are a member of an elite circle of hypnosis trainers – you’re the real deal.

I’m going to share your video with my students and friends.”

Michael Watson – NLP Master Practitioner and Trainer of Hypnosis and NLP

“Just a quick note here to say I’m about 1/2 – 2/3 way through your course now and, without blowing smoke, this is some really fantastic work my friend! This is quite the accomplishment.

Quite simply, I had high expectations for you and this course and you’ve more than exceeded them. It’s even better than I hoped for, worth (much!) more than I paid and I would gladly recommend it to anyone studying hypnosis and who is serious about furthering their understanding, approach and application of these tools. This course is a tremendous value. You could sell it for A LOT more than you’re asking, no doubt…

Of special note and value is the way you set up, it’s absolutely lovely. I’m a big fan of the “It’s not hypnosis” frame and you’re wonderful with it.

Without a doubt, your work and approach will assist me (& others) in growing with hypnosis. You’ve done a stellar job of streamlining the material and cutting the fat off the application.

I’m having a blast making my way through this course. I find myself in complete agreement with most everything you say and I’ve taken 30 pages of notes and thoughts by disc 5 part two…

One thing I really appreciate is making the information available in multiple modalities with audio, visual and cognitive (PDF books) channels. You’re really knocking on all cylinders!

The greatest praise I can give something is recommending it to others. I’ll be very strongly recommending your course to everyone interested in or currently studying hypnosis, beginner and seasoned pro alike! There is so much of value here.

Bravo. I’m a fan, I’m EXTREMELY impressed and happy with your material thus far and a lot of it will be incorporated in my work. Thank you for sharing!”

Jerome Finley – Hypnotist and Master Mentalist

“James, I am a massive fan of your work, love your ideas your views and thinking behind hypnosis. I really am a big fan and have learnt so much from you. Thank you!”

Amit Badiani – Magician, Hypnotist, Hypnotherapist and ‘Manchurian Approach’ Trainer

“I love how you can pace and lead with this stuff, so you stick all their body parts to anything and everything as you springboard: So as x sticks even more, you can notice that y is happening! Great stuff – cheers James!!”

Darren Altman – Hypnotist (London, UK)

“…as good as Igor or any one else I’ve seen – maybe better!”

Steven Girard – Hypnotist (London, UK)

“Last night during my walk-around magic gig, I was testing out your business card, arm stuck and fingers stuck! the result was brilliant! I didn’t hypnotise the guys but showed them plenty of tricks, then the last trick I did was ‘try and bend your arm’, he couldn’t do it! Then his mate wanted a go so I went on to do ‘try and drop the business card into my hands’, he couldn’t do it! And as soon as I clap you will… booooom!! Very effective stuff!”

Kiegan Vallely – Magician and Hypnotist (Brighton, UK)

“James, it has been a pleasure to see you work! You have some great ideas and an infectious attitude to everything. In my opinion, you are one of the few hypnotists working today with a modern attitude to both the performance and the theory behind it.”

Harry Guinness – Ireland’s Premier Street Hypnotist (Dublin, Ireland)

“James has the unparalleled knack to spot the leverage points that create the largest number of choices for his (hypnosis) clients with absolute minimal effort. He has both the elegance of a minimalist and the flair of a visionary. Take his course, it will transform your perceptions and reality.”

Phillip Ryan – Hypnotherapist and NLP Practitioner

“I tried the handstick last night and it worked a treat. In fact after sticking one hand it only took about 10 seconds to stick the other hand as well. And then another 10 seconds to stick both feet – all with eyes open and none of the trance induction stuff that I’d usually do.”

Mike Stoner – Magician, Musician, Hypnotist and NLP Practitioner

“It’s genius on so many levels for me.”

Alistair Donnell – NLP Practitioner

“James, finally read your report! Wished I’d read it earlier! Fantastic work and whatever anyone thinks about it, it certainly increases one’s options. I can’t wait to try it out now!”

Ben White – Hypnotist and IEMT Practitioner

“James’ delivery is excellent – it was well paced, it was clear, and the stuff that we worked on and learned you could use straight away… very masterful!”

Janette Hellyer – NLP Practitioner (talking after NLP training)

“Hi James. My name is Marcello Seri, I’m a mathematician, an hypnotist and a mentalist. A group of friends gifted me with your Hypnosis Without Trance mastery program, and I just want to tell you that it is really great! I’ve used ‘no trance’ hypnosis many times… (the idea came from the name of your course of course) but I’ve never developed a system or a theory so good and complete around it as you have.

I’m a follower of your blogs so I already knew that there was something behind what you do, but your program opened my mind and improved my hypnosis style and my success in a really strong way :). So thank you very much for what is a great product! I’m waiting for the release of the ‘No Fail Protocol’! hoping that I will be released soon!

Have a nice day!”

Marcello Seri – Hypnotist, Mentalist and Mathematician
“Thank you so much for a fantastic weekend on HWT!  It was an excellent experience which has helped me in so many ways.  Your delivery style, together with NLP experience and Clean Language, really resonated with me, and I thoroughly enjoyed my time with you and the other attendees.

No questions were off limits and you completely understand the torments and nemesis of failure of the budding hypnotist.  Most experienced hypnotists skirt around the issue and discuss ignoring failure and being unattached to the outcome and I am sure that comes with time but in the early stages it is almost impossible to be unafraid of failure.  Therefore your ‘no fail,’ step by step, flag testing process completely maps out the route… “
Diane Sweeney – Hypnotist and Hypnotherapist, London U.K.

    Greetings James.
I have been enjoying your videos … great stuff. And I have a question.
You work to bypass the CF covertly. After getting their hand stuck and locked
to the table (head, etc.), does the question “what do you think/feel of that?”
not require them to get critical (evaluative) and thus no longer be bypassing the CF?
Obviously, seems to work okay in your videos … what am I not understanding?

      December 21, 2010

      Hi J

Firstly, I do not ask that question.

What do you think about that” certainly would encourage someone to come out of the experience to analyse it. But “what is that like”, encourages them to go into more deeply to recover the information. Especially when you use other languaging surrounding it that takes them deeper into the experience.

For me, hypnotic language is about directing attention, bur it’s not just where attention is directed that’s important. it is also where attention is directed from. The key to hypnosis is taking the person onto an associated experience. Even if you dissociate them from their hand, for example, it is important to realise that what is more important is that you are associating them to an experience of being dissociated from their hand.

So, the way we use words counts, and there is a big difference between…

“what do you think/feel of that?”

      …and…

“what’s that like, now… as it sticks more”

The first associates to analysis because it focuses on ‘YOU’ in relation to something else (the phenomena), so the person is being asked to perceive as themselves outside of the experience. You lead them to an objective position.

The second leaves the identity position out, taking the perceiver into the experience.

Hope that helps. I may even do a video on this later in the week!

    Hello James,

I have received your DVDs and CDs Hypnosis without trance. I am watching them with much interest. It s a brilliant approach !
I have also watched The Manchurian approach from Anthony Jacquin.
I am wondering if it is possible to do some post hypnotic suggestions with your approach Hypnosis without trance.
For example, while a subject is hypnotized, you borrow his wallet and you put a playing card into it, let s say the 2 of hearts.
Then you give him the suggestion that in a moment, you will ask him to think of a card and he will think of the 2 of hearts.
Then you tell him to forget about these suggestions.
Then you wake him up and ask him to think of any card.
When he chooses the 2 of hearts, you tell him to look inside his wallet and there he finds the 2 of hearts.

Can you do this effect with your approach Hypnosis without trance –

Thanks for your answer, I wish you a happy new year !

    congratulations.
you have a nice approach and view of what is hypnosis and what isnt.
If your continue with this, not only traditional hypnotists will realize that there are still several things to improve in our area and will want to get out of the box, but Hypnosis in general gonna takes new levels.

    Have a great 2011 James.

    Greetings James;
I agree that proving something is happening is very important to get clients to buy into change-will-happen-with-therapy.
Thus a hand stick is great for the first therapy session. But when you are doing a second or third session with a client
do you still do a hand stick to start things off?
    Thanks,

      Greetings J.

No, I don’t. I will often use ideodynamic work but set it up in different ways. I like to keep variety in what I do so as the client can’t predict what is going to happen next.

Much of the time I don’t actually do any overt hypnosis at all, utilising more ‘conversational’ techniques – really it all depends on the client and the approach that I think will work best for them.

      Hope that helps!

      J

  • Hello, James

Happy New Year. I just ordered your No-Fail Protocol from your pre-launch link. Ever since your first tease with this material I’ve been waiting for the opportunity to grab it. Somewhat fortuitously, I’ve been home sick with the flu these past two days (Silver lining. Yeah, baby.).

Of all the hypnotists I’ve discovered in my research, you and Jeff Stephens have had the most impact on my approach in this fascinating field. What I really appreciate is the elegance of your thinking. You have a knack for sussing out the process behind the seeming magic of hypnosis. And you can explain that process so it makes sense. In my estimation you are adding exceptionally useful nuances to the field. Keep it up.

    Korey

James, I really have got a lot of great ideas out of the No Fail protocol DVD and CD program, one of the better ones I’ve encountered in the past 15+ years of being in the hypnosis field. You are definitely spot on that fear of failure is the primary limitation of most hypnotic practitioners and provide a workable way of overcoming it. Jim

Yesterday I attended the HWT Changework Application Programme with my colleague. As two highly qualified and experienced hypnotherapists and NLP Master Practitioners we expected that we may learn one or two ‘nice to know’ techniques. What we didn’t expect was the quantum shift this programme can create. James is a personable and very skilled individual, he has produced a system that merges hypnosis, NLP, Clean Language, Clean Space and Hyperempiria amongst other disciplines into a highly effective therapeutic tool box. His execution of the techniques was a masterclass in elegance and effectiveness.
This is not a programme to attend if you are stuck in the trance induction and ‘hypnosis as a panacea’ school. James will challenge your preconceptions and demonstrate how his methods work effectively and without fuss. This is a must to add to your therapist toolbox. There’s a lot more to this guy than Hand Sticking and Hypnosis without trance.

    Dear James,
I have been in the NLP / Hypnosis field since the 90’s, mostly private hypnotherapy some demos / seminars.
I have recently purchased your HWT program and the NFP after going through for the first time it has answered so many questions that I had in my own mind about hypnosis and what hypnosis actually is.
If you have time to answer the following question for me it would be wonderful.
What are the similarities / differences between your model of hypnosis and Anthony Jacquins AI Model ?
In a recent interview that Anthony did, he basically said that you were already doing much of what the AI Model is proposing.
Looking forward to your comments on this,
    Thanks
    Tony

      Hi Tony

I really like the A.I. model as a FUNCTIONAL model of hypnosis… Ant and Kev have done a fantastic job! I am not yet sold, however, that it is a complete model of how hypnosis works ‘under the bonnet/hood’ (but then, I don’t think that what we call ‘hypnosis’ really is just one thing).

That said, what counts in my book is whether it helps people hypnotise well… and I really can’t see how it can’t.

I also have to take my hat of to the head hackers for actually doing some real thinking about hypnosis rather than just sticking with the old myths and models!

  • This is the way I like to practice, I have found since my first days in 1999 that the results are better for those who are not in an altered state of being. Also these days its more ethical and less likely to induce a client to state that anything untoward went on.

What are (honestly) the chances of success? Say I’ve already hypnotized somebody. Could I confidently approach them and know that just by talking to them, I could make them see me as invisible? This won’t affect whether or not I’ll buy your course, but I would be interested in an honest reply (perhaps via email). I’d like to know honestly. Thanks. 🙂

      August 6, 2011

Just to clarify – as in, put them in a trance a few weeks ago. So they definitely trust my suggestions and know I know what I’m doing.

    • James Tripp

      August 7, 2011

      Hi Laurence

Given the appropriate skill level and knowledge of what you are doing and the context that you describe, absolutely. You have already had this person responding well, so why wouldn’t they respond again (unless they are not in the mood for it). All hypnosis works “just by talking to people” (or more specifically, communicating’ – the trick is, knowing what to communicate and how (communication works on many levels).

If the question here is really “would it work without induction?” then my answer is to point out that anything that works with induction works without – induction is at best a ritual that provides meaning, but there are other ways to provide that meaning.

Just to reiterate, hypnosis is not a special state and has nothing to do with a special state! Hypnosis is more like a psychological game – how well you play that game depends upon your skill levels and knowledge of the ‘mechanics’ of the game and strategy.

I’d just like to ask if you could address a topic that could be of interest to many people here in a future blog post.

Considering the subtle linguistic nuances that you’re dealing with in your work – how would you approach a person who maybe doesn’t speak English as a first language?

Is it possible or is (near) native fluency a pre-requsite for these techniques to work?

I ask as I live in Japan and would love to begin trying some basic effects (such as hand sticks), but I’m wary of the language barrier.

    Thanks,
    Damon

    Hi James,

I Tried HWT recently and I am now a big fan. What I like most is that with traditional trance hypnosis I always have that niggling feeling that the subject is not ‘fully under’ and I have to keep testing and deepening. I call that the point of ‘epic fail’.
With HWT its is so obvious when they are responding (or not) when their hand becomes stuck, or a card is stuck in their fingers.

Whenever I feel confident, it is reflected in the subject and I am getting much better results.

    Thank you,
    Gordon.

Hi james.. Just want to greet you good job for your wonderful products. And just wanna ask, what mentalism books would you suggest for a beginner like me to learn the tricks that you had done in “no fail protocol”. The one where you force someone to pick a card then reveal it facing backwards in a deck of cards.. Thx

    • James Tripp

      November 3, 2011

      Hi Richard

      Thanks for the feedback!

The answer to that question will depend upon what you mean by ‘mentalism’. If you mean reading body language, genuinely predicting behaviour, using verbal and nonverbal influence, then the answer is that you are already on that path!

If you meant the performance art of mentalism, then the story is a little different. As Derren Brown says, what he does fuses “magic, suggestion, psychology, misdirection and showmanship”. So, I would recommend, for a beginner (and most aptly related to mentalism)…

‘Mind Magic’: Self Working Mental Magic by Karl Fulves, Mind Magic by Marc LaMezma
‘Suggestion’: Wonder Words (audio set) by Kenton Knepper
‘Psychology’: The Alchemical Tools by Paul Brook
‘Misdirection’: Physical misdirection you will lean from magic, psychological misdirection from suggestion and psychology. So we have these covered.
‘Showmanship’: Magic and Showmanship by Henning Nelms

With that little lot and a little dedication you will be out and about blowing peoples minds in no time!

          Hi Richard

That effect is a presentation of my own which combines hypnosis (all the foot sticking stuff) with a classic magic method. I am unwilling to reveal the method as it would be bad form (from a magicians perspective) to do so… although I’m sure if you did some smart Googling you could find out!

    • James Tripp

      November 3, 2011

      Hi Michael

Not my field and I’m not sure who to recommend.

For me, the best form of self hypnosis is learning to direct your own attention and resourcefulness through re-training your internal dialogue. You are giving yourself suggestions all the time, the question is what are you suggesting and how are you directing yourself?

    Hello,

I’m a massagetherapist and I’m curious if this could help me with my work. Can I learn this online?
    Greetings,

    Heleen

    • James Tripp

      November 27, 2011

      Hi Heleen

Interestingly, I was once planning to run specialist courses in hypnotic communication for manual therapists! The reason being is that I used to do manual therapy myself (founded in an Osteopathic approach).

As a physical therapist I found that the more I learned about hypnotic communication, the better my results got. In the end I just stopped doing the manual therapy and just did hypnosis! (Obviously, my client demographic shifted when I did this).

You can learn Hypnosis Without Trance through home study, but you would need to use a little imagination as to how to apply it to manual therapy as this is not the context to which the home study material is currently geared).

      Hope that helps!

    Hi James

Awsome stuff. Thank you for all the amazing videos. You are doing an amazing job.

Something I have been wondering about : Have you ever had an abreaction when using the HWT method, or is this limited to trance only?

    Kallie

    • James Tripp

      November 27, 2011

      Hi Kallie

      Thank you for your feedback!

Regarding abreaction, when I was hanging with the ‘street hypnosis crowd’ I saw several instances of abreaction as a result of ‘sleep… deeper and deeper’ based hypnosis, and this was one of the things that kept me away from it. Using eyes open hypnosis and a ‘no-trance’ frame, however, I have never had an abreaction.

I don’t think that this is as a result of different states as such, but more a result of different framing.

  • Hi James
I studied and practised for fun, Hypnosis during the 70’s. I later applied “self-hypnotic suggestions” to myself after a serious shoulder joint operation and discovered the actual value in the hypnosis concept…like what you teach; the power of suggestion (post-hypnotic suggestions, auto suggestions, etc.).
I later stopped being interested in “tricks”, etc. and started to investigate and formulate ideas for myself on how to use the power of my mind to influence my thought trains, how my mind works, etc. Realizing this, I knew that I create my own realities, what I perceive and believe as the “truth”. As my new website blog suggests, reality is what you decide it to be, your mind believes it and instructs your body to obey.
So, to end, I fully support your concept of HWT, because that’s where the real value of Hypnosis lies…everyday applications that influence how you decide your day, or events, are going to turn out.
I subscribed to your report on HWT and will give feedback when I’ve read it! Cool stuff!

    Regards

    Jack

    Hi James

I was just reading the first part of your ‘Beyond the Trance Myth’ article with fascination.

It got me thinking, are you able to get people to stop smoking or stop bad habits (binge eating, nail biting etc) without inducing trance? These are the day to day things I get so wondered what your perspective is on this.

Great article by the way and am reading with great interest 🙂

  • James Tripp

    December 5, 2011

    Hi David

The simple answer is ‘yes’. Speaking for myself, these days I rarely use formal ‘trancework’ with my clients.

The more interesting questions for me are “what is ‘trance’?” and “why should you need ‘trance’ to do anything?”

The answer to the first question there seems little consensus upon. The answer to the second? Well I haven’t asked that too much yet… but I think I’m probably going to start!

The Hypnosis Wizardry Live course is really just about hypnosis and hypnotic phenomena, and not about changework or therapy.

Did I read that if you but your CD sets now, you would get these discounted when you signed up for the full course?

    January 18, 2012

    Hi James,

Over the last few years I have been reading both hypnosis, hypnotherapy, CBT, NLP and a number of other books in this ‘ball park’. I consider myself to have a reasonably well balanced idea of the ‘mechanics’ of hypnosis and facilitating change but I still lack that little something to actually be able to perform it. What would you suggest would be the next logical step in making this change in myself? Is it further home study or perhaps one of your workshops?

    Regards

    Carl

    • James Tripp

      January 19, 2012

      Hi Carl

If I understand you, the change you want to make is to start doing changework?

The answer is to just start doing it. There is no way of getting ‘confidence’ in doing this kind of work without actually doing it, because confidence comes from experience.

You don’t have to be perfect before you begin. Just stay away from heavy therapy stuff and get busy doing some sessions.

      All the very best

  • Ian

    January 18, 2012

First i’d like to say I’ve got all 3 of your packs, all of which i love.

However it leaves me with a problem.
    a bit of history first
The tv show ‘mythbusters’ had a hypnosis special. The 2 main ‘tests’ were:
    1) can you be made to do something out of your control(eg jumping up&down etc)
    2) can hypnosis be used to improve your memory
in brief it comprised of a somewhat double standard way, for test 1 they visited a centre specialising in hypnotherapy(telling them to relax), but for test 2 they instead brought in a stage hypnotist who, although edited for standard tv legalislation reasons didn’t show in full, but from what they did show that he appeared to use a standard ‘arm-jerk’ induction.
Unsuprisingly the first test they ‘proved’ was a *myth*!!! (i.e. suggesting they use actors)
But the second was much more successful & a *fact*

I have explained to non-hypnosis-knowledged friends that hypnotherapy is very different from hypnosis.
In the past I could explain it with the jerk method for hypnosis vs lengthy deep relaxation for hypnotherapy.
However the HWT method adds a third option-hypnosis but without the jerk, so can you suggest how i can add that to my previous explanation.

Also secondly i wanted to know are there seperate names for hynotherapy & therapy by hypnosis?

Thanks & i’d also appreciate any thoughts on a tv show providing misleading information to the viewing public.

    Ian

    • James Tripp

      January 19, 2012

      Hi Ian

To integrate stuff? I’ll borrow from NIKE here: just do it!

Take what you know, experiment and play.

And regarding the TV show – like human beings, TV shows always mislead. They have an agenda and a set of personal biases and this always guarantees a lack of impartiality.

What do you think of Penn & Teller’s “Bullshit!” episode about hypnosis?

    • admin

      March 27, 2012

I haven’t seen it for such a long time Cdabam, that I can’t really remember it.

I would say, however, that there is a lot of BS around hypnosis. I believe most classical conceptions of hypnosis are B.S. and I also see many claims made by Hypnosis trainers and Hypnotherapists as BS.

Does that mean that Hypnosis is BS? No… just that it is poorly understood.

      All the very best
