Number Amnesia – Ideomotor Method

This clip was taken at the ‘No-Fail Protocol‘ workshop held in April 2010. It is a classic ‘Name Amnesia’ piece, but what is different here is that I am using ideomotor phenomena to set it up (ideomotoer to set up ideocognitive).

The reason for this choice was that this volunteer had already shown great competence in ideomotor phenomena, so it made good sense to utilise this competence in setting up the ‘amnesia’.

I need to say something about why this kind of amnesia is not really amnesia at all, but I’ll save that for the next post.

(I’d like to tip the HMI for the finger spreading idea).

"I received the Hypnosis Mastery Programme last Saturday. I think it is the best product that I have ever studied. The way James describes things is great and I have learned more these last 2 days than ever before since I began learning hypnosis. Really I would have happily paid double to get just half the content."

  • Fabulous work James. I may have misheard some stuff, but liked…
“Those fingers will have emotion all on their own.”
“This is your hand?” (yes) “because that was a suggestion.”

    Very nicely done. Thanks!!!

  • Well done… I do a lot of this myself. I still find, even after a demonstration or 3 or 8… that people still want to argue that there is trance, it just isn’t visible trance.

Anyway, I like the hijack… it is one of my favorite methods.

Hey guys, for people like you who do this often. What percentage of the time does forgetting one’s name work? I would like to use that as a strong convincer in a hypnotherapy session, but I’m afraid of going for it and it doesn’t work. Does anyone here manage to create this effect nearly 100% of the time?

  • I LOVE this demo. I use this all the time. I’ll do names, numbers, colors, etc.

By far, the best way to get the subject to go blank on anything is to not mention it before hand. In other words, don’t mention the number 4 disappearing – infer the number between 3 and 5 disappearing (like in the video above). For names, it’s the same thing. The subject will do better if they don’t actually SAY the name.

Color is fun too. Subject is wearing a red/blue/green etc. shirt, and can fully recognize what color it is. After the little bit of playing with him, he can see the shirt, see the color, but has absolutely no idea what it is.

To be really powerful, do the name amnesia with a married or engaged couple. He’d never risk the trouble he’d be in if he forgot her name, and *poof* he does. No sane man would look at his fiance or wife and tell her he can’t remember her name.

    A lot of fun.

Thanks for sharing this video, James!

Hey James! love your videos… your videos motivate me to try doing new things through hypnosis…
James can you show us a hypnosis demonstration in which a person can recall whichever thing he likes, like a photographic memory or a person having super strength 😉
I am always fascinated by how human capabilities can be extended beyond possible and would love to see demonstration like that..

      Hi DarkCall

‘Superhuman’ stuff is not something I have done much experimenting in – most of what I do (aside from the party tricks) is behaviour/response change and influence and persuasion.

If I ever do get into that stuff, however, you can be sure you’ll see it here on the HWT blog!

Thank you for this very convincing clip.
Would the number amnesia work as well if you mentioned the number 4 to be forgotten, or is the not- mentioning of “4” (i.e. the number between 3 and 5 ) an essential part of your instant success.?
In hypnotherapy sessions I have come across clients who after having “forgotten” their name come up with another name for themselves. Do you think as well there is an underlying importance ? If yes, how do you use it, overtly or covertly ?
Best wishes and looking forward to hearing from you

      Hi Ingrid

I have found not mentioning the number to help – though with really good subjects, it often doesn’t matter (my view is, whatever helps, helps!).

For me, this kind of stuff is for curiosity and fun. Personally I don’t really use it in client work (I have done in the past for ‘convincer’ purposes, but I don’t work that way anymore).

    This is amazing James!
I have gone through the other tricks of yours such as hand stick etc. There, you have clearly explained how that happens, why, how to influence the client’s mind and stuffs like that. Would you please do the same for this one too?

I’m just a beginner. Do you think it is worth trying this one to someone for a beginner like me?

This question may look funny but what if the client completely forgets number 4?

      Hi Syamanta

If you follow the HWT system, and escalate via the hypnotic ladder, you will find that when you get to that ‘rung’ on the ladder, you should be able to suggest away the number by all manner of means. OR you could go for this from cold (no guarantee you’ll get it… but then again when is there!)

You can get much of the information you might need from the How To Hypnotise Without Trance series in the members area, but if you are really serious about learning to do this, I recommend getting yourself the Hypnosis Mastery Programme.

    Hello James!

I do not speak the English language too well because I am Hungarian. I don’t understand, what you say to that man how, only something like this, This is not hypnosis. Concentrate on your finger.” I mean nothing by his end altogether already. Can you write the procession of the suggestions down after each other? There would be big help.

      Hi Attila

I agree a transcript would be a potentially useful thing, but the truth is I have other priorities than transcribing this.

      Sorry about that!

          Hi Chins

More stuff on Reality Shaping, Empowered Living and Influential Communication. Less on formal hypnosis, but I will still be answering hypnosis questions via video. There are a couple of books being written too.

    Hi James,

This is a really interesting aproach. And I was wondering, if this is not a conventional hypnotic amnesia, then how do they recall the forgotten thing at the end?

      December 3, 2015

      Hi Peter

I’m not sure I understand your question… Are you asking how I close the sequence?

Also, I’m not sure what you are calling a ‘conventional hypnotic amnesia’?

    hi James,
i’m fascinated by these demonstrations of the human mind’s capabilities and seeing as i really love the way you see things, i was wondering if you could explain what exactly is happening with the hypnotic amnesia? is it a kind of cognitive illusion? does the subject really can’t remember the number? or just can’t say it?
    thank you,
