Melbourne & Sydney Time – Thursday, February 23, 2012 at 8:30:00 AM

Put it in your calendar! (see below for other timezones)

Hi All!

Over the last few months I have had a lot of people contact me and asking questions about what it takes to get really good with Hypnosis and NLP, which got me thinking about putting together a podcast on the subject. Thinking about it, that is, rather than actually getting around to it!

Well, by the course of events, about a week back I found myself discussing this very topic in a Skype chat with the phenomenal Melbourne based NLPer and ‘Spiral Somaticist’ James Tsakalos, during which we found each other to have quite a bit to say on the subject (being a pair of highly opinionated old *******!). It was a great conversation, and one we thought was definitely worth having again (and then some!) and sharing with the world at large. (Well, at least that part of it interested in developing high level skills in Hypnosis and/or NLP.)

For those of you who don’t yet know James, he is a rare gem of the NLP world and much sought after trainer (NLP and Spiral Somatics) with a reputation for producing highly skilled students. A such, he knows a lot about what it really takes to get good with the skills and start making stuff happen with them.

So, what does it take to get really good with Hypnosis and NLP?

Is it about talent? Hard work? Smart work? Is there a formula? Can anyone do it?

These are the kind of questions we (The James T’s ) will be answering for you in this live conversation! And we would very much like it if you would join us.

If you want to be part of this you can either join the conversation by Skype or good old fashioned telephone, or if you prefer, simply listen in via the webcast below.

Also, if you have any questions relating to the subject that you would like to get answered, please do submit them to us via the Q&A submission box below (we will answer as many questions as we can, starting with the most popular).

O.K. Enough chat – this is going to be a great conversation, so I look forward to having you there as part of it all!

All the very best

James

P.S. You can find out about James and what he does at www.nlpmelbourne.com.au

P.P.S. Please do help to spread the word about event this by SHARING or TWEETING (look left!).

***LISTEN TO THE FULL TELESEMINAR/WEBINAR BELOW***

Hello Hypno-people!

One of the reasons I love helping people to develop as hypnotists is becasue hypnosis is a skill-set and knowledge-set that has, without question, changed my life.

Before beginning learning hypnosis I really wasn’t getting very much of what I wanted out of life – stuck in a lousy dead end job at the mercy of a sadistic boss and being washed around by the tides of life! NOT GOOD!

But learning and coming to understand hypnosis (in it’s many and varied forms) changed all that, and for one simple but very clear reason – it massively increased my ability to influence both myself and the world around me!

When people think about Hypnosis Without Trance they think about hand-sticks, amnesias, hallucinations and the like, but really that stuff is just surface of things – the party pieces, if you like.

The place where hypnosis really makes a difference is EVERY SINGLE DAY – in every interaction with other people and every aspect of your thinking! But most people don’t know this… they only see the surface!

On Wednesday the 30th of November at 20:00 hours world time, I had the opportunity to partake in a live on-line conversation about Hypnosis as it relates to Personal Influence!

In the conversation was:

    * Me! AKA James Tripp (Hypnosis Without Trance)
* Nathan Thomas (Keys to the Mind)
* Marcus Oakey (The Charisma Coach)

And it was a conversation that I very much enjoyed!

If Hypnosis as it relates to Personal Influence I would like to invite you to listen in to that conversation, because there are plenty on nuggets to be had! You can listen right here:

I hope you enjoy listening in, and please do feel free to post any comments or questions in the comment section below.

All the very best

James Tripp

Hi Y’all

***Video Below***

If you are in the UK you will have had the opportunity to watch the first of Derren Brown’s The Experiments series. This first episode was called The Assassin and took the form of an intricate experiment to find out whether a regular person could be ‘hypnotically programmed’ to become assassinate a public figure.

Now I already know that many Hypnotherpists are horrified that Derren would do this (“it is going to frighten the public/give them the wrong idea”) but I really enjoyed the show and welcome the discussion it raises.

In the video I have discussed some of the key points regarding the overall concept. It is not a complete breakdown and has avoided ‘spoilers’. There is a lot more to say about Derren’s excellent show (a return to form for Derren, IMO), much of which, I’m sure, will come out int the comments section below the video (If you have anything to say or ask, please do contribute to the discussion!)

ADDENDUM (23rd October 2011):

I want to be clear that I am NOT saying that ‘what you see is what you get’ with Derren’s show. When I say that it is possible to ‘hypnotically’ influence someone to perform an assassination, I don’t necessarily mean ‘put them into trance and give them a post-hypnotic suggestion’! As most people who have followed this blog will know, I view hypnosis as something subtler than that which is presented by ‘old school’ models of hypnosis.

Derren achieved what he achieved within a particular context, much of what is presented is about PRESENTATION rather than getting results. If the CIA ever experimented with classic ‘induction based’ hypnosis to ‘programme’ assassins, I am absolutely sure they would have dropped it in favour of more effective methods that are better suited to their needs and contexts.

Remember, Derren is not just doing hypnosis, he is also presenting it… selling the hypnosis itself!

2nd ADDENDUM (24th October 2011):

To address concerns of ‘psychological manipulation’ through formal hypnosis…

It is true that people can be manipulated during a formal hypnosis ‘session’, but it is also true that they can be (and are) manipulated during any other human interaction.

The subtleties of human psychology and communication are always at play in every interaction we partake in, and in the ‘Assassin’ example it is not that Derren puts this guy into a ‘trance’ that makes him influenceable in this way.

The real ‘hypnosis’ here was the stuff going on underneath of the surface of formal hypnosis as presented.

And I want to make this absolutely clear:

The guy on the show was not ‘controlled’, he was INFLUENCED!

There is a difference. He was not a zombie, because hypnosis is NOT absolute mind control.

Real hypnosis is subtler – it is the culmination of the subtle communication and psychology stuff that lies beneath the surface and makes the ‘formal processes’ work. And, of course, you can use any amount of that subtle communication and psychology stuff outside of the context of ‘formal hypnosis’.

Anyhows… enjoy the vid!

Occasionally I drop in on a particular Facebook discussion group for hypnotists and see what kind of debates are raging (and there are always debates raging!)

One theme that seems to come up a lot is…

What’s best: Hypnosis or NLP?

Here’s a view on this that I already shared on FB, but I thought would be good to share here too and perhaps expand it a little:

“What I’m about to say seems so clear and obvious to me, but apparently it is not to many others – part of the beauty of us all understanding things in our own unique way!

NLP and Hypnosis are just names that tell us nothing about what is really going on. Just different ways to cut the same pie. IMO of course.

Each one breaks down into sets of skills, many of which overlap.

Formal ‘hypnosis’ has the advantage of an overt ritual. Informal ‘hypnosis’/NLP/influence/communication juju/whatever has the advantage of flexibility of application – I have used this in many places and situations in which formal ‘trance’ (whatever that might be) rituals would be totally inappropriate and unwelcome.

There are pro’s and cons to all approaches, what fits best in the specific context and given the desired outcome is what is best.

This reminds me of the old debates on martial arts forums about which art is ‘best’. And who does best in ‘the cage’? The MMA (Mixed Martial Art) guys… the ones who mix it up and find the blend that works best for them in the context they need it.

I’ve heard the same debate in other areas too – “what’s best – Chiropractic or Osteopathy?” The truth is it depends upon the skills of the practitioner rather than the label they use to describe what they do.

In every field, it is those who try to keep their art ‘pure’ and rigidly define what it is and isn’t who end up losing the edge. Those who see what they do – see their skillset – as a ‘living’ thing to be explored and evolved always end up with the greatest range of flexibility and application. Like I say, seems obvious…”

I hope you will all forgive the slightly cocky tone to that but there is a point there that needs to be made. If you want fantastic skills, lose the boundaries around what you do and mix it up. Learn and apply whatever helps and whatever gives you the edge. Hypnosis/NLP/Mind-Skills/Influence/Coaching-Skills/Cognitive Linguistics/Hoodoo/JuJu/… whatever you call it and whatever works!

This is the future… make it yours!

All the very best

Hello HWTers!

*Video Below!*

But first… exciting news! Recently I have had a number of interesting conversations with U.S. Jeffrey Stephens. Jeff is a guy with a lot of passion about hypnosis and a lot to say on the subject – not to mention being a practitioner of phenomenal skill!

On the surface Jeff’s approach to hypnosis looks pretty different from HWT. It has a more ‘old school’ trance based look and feel, but if you get underneath that we have a lot more in common than one may first think.

And we have some differences!

Anyhows, I thought it would be good to introduce Jeff here, so I’ve hijacked a little of his video (see below) and arranged for us to have a live open conversation about hypnosis that you can all join in (either to ask questions or just to listen in). Also joining us in the conversation will be U.K. Hypnotherapist and Fighters Mind coach Alan Whitton. Al will be steering the conversation and insuring we answer even the most thorny questions.

The conversation will take place next Wednesday (7th September) at 6:30 P.M. International (7:30 P.M. British Summer Time) and Providing you listen via Skype or the Web there are no charges to listen or join in. You can get all the details below the video (along with other times for other timezones).

I hope you enjoy the video and join us for this LIVE conversation!

All the very best

James

P.S. If you are really into exploring hypnosis, please ‘LIKE’ ‘SHARE’ and generally spread the word on this – it is going to be great!

This is a case study on the application of HWT to changework, presented by the incredibly creative hypnotist Roland Suljic. If you have any questions or comments, I know that both Roland and I would love to address them, so please do leave them in the comments section below! Over to Roland!

The case: Subject is a 38-year-old engineer with fear of blushing in awkward public situations. On the one hand he is rather easy to influence but tends to be skeptical on the other hand as long as doubts remain. The subject is highly fascinated by stage hypnosis and its possibilities.

The approach:

Step 1: Preframing and ‘Big Because’
Step 2: HWT Hand Stick as convincer
Step 3: Shift from ‘Not hypnosis frame’ to ‘hypnosis frame’
Step 4: Intervention (Desensitization)
Step 5: Ending the session

Step 1: Preframing and “Big Because”

The subject explicitly asked for hypnosis in the first place but then again showed signs of doubt whether or not hypnosis might be able to change his situation. As in the last case study, I explained him that he had not been born with this fear but had learned it in the past, while the inborn fears (of falling and loud noises) had been unlearned since birth which leads to the conclusion that all fears can be learned and unlearned. Next, I explained to him that the mind learns by associating and that his mind, at some point in the past, had associated the feeling of awkwardness to the feeling of fear.

I framed his problem as being comprised of two elements, i.e. the trigger and the physiological reaction, both linked together by the ‘A means B’ pattern of association which is typical for the mind. The goal of the whole hypnosis intervention was severing this connection by redefining the association in his mind.

His reactions indicated that he had bought in, so I suggested starting the process with a preliminary practice und the „not hypnosis“ frame.

Step 2: HWT Hand Stick as convincer

I did a standard HWT Hand Stick routine (as described in the HWT Mastery Programme) which took about half a minute until his left hand stuck to his leg. This experience finally let all remaining doubt dissipate and the subject was now fully convinced about me, my skills and the coming procedure.

Next, I opened a new loop by unsticking his hand and asking him to interlink his fingers. Then I stuck his fingers and palms firmly together and tested him. He was uncapable of seaparating his hands, so I could end up step 2 and proceed to next step.

Step 3: Shift from ‘not hypnosis frame’ to ‘hypnosis frame’

As step 2 was framed as ‘not hypnosis’ but the subject expected to be hypnotised, it was now necessary to change the frame from ‘not hypnosis’ to ‘hypnosis’. I did this my standard way by telling him:

“Now that you experience the power and control of your mind over your body without any induced trance whatsoever, you can begin to start feeling how much more powerful this control becomes as soon as you enter real hypnosis, can’t you?”

After eliciting a “yes” response from him, I told him to pick a point somewhere on his hands, suggested heavy eyelids and led him into a trance. Now, in order to start the real intervention, another ‘big because’ was necessary, so I told him:

“As you are very relaxed now, your mind is open to my suggestions and your thoughts and ideas. You can feel your hands still stuck together and you still cannot separate them, even if you try really hard. This is a representation for the situation that you wish to change. One hand represents the trigger, the other one represents the physiological reaction and when both come together you feel out of control. And as you begin to remember one very unpleasant situation of your past you start to feel out of control now as you did then. Nod when you feel it. [Waiting for signal]. That’s right. And as you feel that again your mind starts to associate it automatically with the stuck hands and corresponding feeling of being out of control as you begin to focus on that now. Nod when you feel it. [Waiting for signal]. That’s right. And now, as this situation of stuckness represents the situation that you wish to change in your mind, all we have to do is to unstick your hands, finger by finger, thus unlearning the unwanted behaviour while we teach your mind to associate something new to the feeling of awkwardness, thus creating a new behaviour. Now, focus on the relaxation in your body …”

I then intensified the feeling of relaxation before procedding to the next step.

Step 4: Intervention (Desensitization)

For those of you who don’t know the term: The principal idea of desensitization is imagining a fearful situation while the body is very relaxed. As anxiety and relaxation cannot exist in the body at the same time, the mind learns to associate relaxation with the mental images.

I combined this simple therapeutic principle with the HWT Hand Stick, using the hands as a representation for the situation in order to release it step by step, finger by finger. So, I ran the subject through a series of ten imagined situations, in which the level of akwardness of the imagined situation increased with every step. The central suggestion was always:

“As you see this situation in your mind’s eye you can feel the awkwardness related to it but your body remains as deeply relaxed and calm as it is now. And when you clearly feel this deep releaxation and calmness throughout your body although you are in this awkward situation, your right-hand pinkie unsticks and you regain control of it.”

This was the suggestion for the first scenario, the following unstuck the left-hand pinkie, the third released the right-hand ring finger and so on, in the order from pinkies to thumbs. [Hint: This order is essential for two reasons, so I do NOT recommend reversing the order. First reason: The pinkie is weaker than the thumb and is therefore connected to the less fearful scenarios in alignment with the symbolic language of the subconscious. Second reason (even more important): Very many people are physiologically unable to lift the ring finger without lifting the pinkie at the same time. Therefore, the pinkie must be released first.]

After running him through the tenth scenario (with the highest level of awkwardness), all fingers and thumbs were free, and I gave him the final suggestion:

“Now all your fingers are unstuck as your mind has linked a new physiological state to the situations, in which awkwardness may arise. From now on, whenever you feel the emotion of awkwardness, your body stays completely calm and relaxed, in fact, you are no longer capable of blushing in those situations because this old behaviour is unlearned. You can go back in your memories to a moment where the feeling of awkwardness was very high, finding that your body is relaxed and calm, but can try. Go on, try to feel something different from relaxation in this kind of situation, really try, but the more you try, the stronger the relaxation becomes, and when you feel this, your palms finally unstick and you can separate your hands.”

I watched him trying until he separated his palms. Then I used an element of surprise and confusion by suddenly grabbing his hands and pulling them apart, saying ‘”Done! You’re free now. Open your eyes and look at me!” He slowly opened his eyes and looked at me in a confused way. I elicited a reality report by asking “What’s that like for you, being free and feeling that the old behaviour is gone now?” He answered “It’s kind of cool.” I fed that back, saying “Yes, it is kind of cool, and you can feel this kind of cool even more fully as your eyelids start to close again… becoming heavier and heavier …”

Step 5: Ending the session

Well, the ending was pretty standard, so there’s not much to report. I ended the trance, closed all open loops and verified that both hands had returned to normal.

That’s the report for this time.

Please DO comment and please DO give feedback. Maybe you have creative ideas about possible variations? I’d be happy to read them, and I’m sure that James feels just the same.
