It is about a week and a half since I posted The Haunted Key – Self Hypnosis and the Ideomotor Response.

The post got a lot of interest, both from people who enjoyed it and tried it out as well as a few who were claiming that I was not really doing what I was saying I was doing and it had nothing to do with hypnosis! The CHEEK .

Well, because of the interest I thought it might be nice to post a follow up video of me doing this in someone else’s hand, just to lay to rest any ugly rumours about how it’s done. I also thought it would be good to take the opportunity to share some practical tips that increase the likelihood of it happening effectively. On Monday 30th April 2012 I was joined by ‘Professional Opportunist’ James Brown for a very special HWT Hypnosis Conversation. James is a professional magician, pickpocket and hypnotist who has rich experience of blending these arts into something quite wonderful and unique.

This is a slightly ‘left of field’ (off key?) piece, which initially I was not going to share because I thought it might be a bit ‘out there’, but…

Essentially I am taking myself into an altered reality to generate a hypnotic phenomenon – an ideomotor effect. Now this looks nothing like people generally expect self-hypnosis to like, but it is a great piece to illustrate certain principles, most notably, the hypnotic loop.

The effect is classically called The Haunted Key in Mentalism, and that is what I have called it here, although the way I present it is generally within an ‘energy’ or ‘chi’ frame.

It may take a little practise and dedication, but stick with it and you will have both a fun little performance piece as well as an interesting first person insight into the hypnotic experience.

ADDENDUM

I have been asked by private message whether this is a ‘special’ key. It is not! This can be done with any key of the right design, and in this instance, the key is not even a key – it is a bottle opener shaped like a key!
If you are practising this, however, do try it out with different keys, as all keys have different weightings and balance points and some will be easier to use than others. JT

2nd ADDENDUM

I would like to credit mentalist Richard Osterlind with this approach to The Haunted Key (From one of his excellent books Making Real Magic, or Making Magic Real… can’t remember which).

There is a more common approach to doing the Haunted Key that many magicians may be familiar with – it uses consciously directed hand angling, but it rarely looks very convincing because it is very difficult to do with the appropriate subtlety when consciously directed. THIS IS NOT THAT METHOD!

I am currently going through a lot of old video and re-editing various bits and pieces for inclusion in the forthcoming Hypnosis Without Trance Private Members area, and I came across this clip, taken from the first HWT workshop in December 2009.

Having polished it up a little (can’t do much about the shaky camerawork though ), I thought it would be worth re-posting here on the blog, as it covers an important aspect of hypnotic communication that is often overlooked – non-verbal communication.

Generally speaking, when people think about hypnotic communication, they usually think exclusively in terms of language patterns. Language patterns are important, but if you aren’t supporting your linguistics with ‘full body communication’ (or ‘pantomime’) you will be massively reducing the power and impact of your communication. And that is what this video is all about!

Hi All!

As many of you may know, I am a big fan of a ‘hypnotic language’ model called Clean Language. Clean Language (CL) is not only a key element to the professional changework and coaching that I do, but also one of the major influences on my personal approach to my ‘Hypnosis Without Trance‘ approach.

Now I cannot overstate how important CL has been for me. It was certainly the difference that made the difference for me regarding efficacy as a changework practitioner, and is one of the most powerful and consistently effective modalities for change that I have experienced on the client end of the equation. From a practitioner perspective, as I have often said…

“If you are going to take away all my tools, leave me with Clean Language!”

And yet… So many people I have pointed in the direction of Clean Language have looked it over and apparently totally failed to ‘get it’ – why?

Well, I think in part it is down to it’s apparent, but deceptive, simplicity…

…on the surface it’s just 12 basic questions, asked in a particular ‘hypnotic’ (and slightly unusual) way.

Because of this, it is easy to learn the questions and ask them, but in doing so all the stuff that really makes it rock gets missed. And rock it most certainly does!

Clean Language was originally developed by New Zealand Hypnotherapist David Grove. Grove developed the approach as a means of facilitating ‘psychoactive processing’ of the clients material in real-time – moment-by-moment. CL is about being there in the moment with the client/subject, and facilitating their shifting experience – no scripts, no ‘pre-boxed’ technique, just real-time psychoactive facilitation. It really is magic!

Sadly, David Grove passed away a few years ago and there is no video of him available on YouTube or anything similar. However, his legacy lives on in a select few who have mastered the art of CL. One of those people is Judy Rees – top international coach and co-author of the book Clean Language (Crown House Publications). Now Judy is no ‘power hypnotist’ in the classic sense, but boy can she get change happening (she is not my personal coach without reason!). And…

On Wednesday 4th April 2012 at 8pm GMT (International Time) I will be interviewing Judy about Clean Language, and specifically about making Clean Language work in ‘the real world’.

Judy will be sharing some of her personal tips for making CL work across a range of contexts, so if you are a changeworker, coach, hypnotherapist or just someone interested in pragmatic applications for ‘hypnotic technologies’ you will want to be on this call. The details are all below!

Hi All!

Over the last few months I have had a lot of people contact me and asking questions about what it takes to get really good with Hypnosis and NLP, which got me thinking about putting together a podcast on the subject. Thinking about it, that is, rather than actually getting around to it!

Well, by the course of events, about a week back I found myself discussing this very topic in a Skype chat with the phenomenal Melbourne based NLPer and ‘Spiral Somaticist’ James Tsakalos, during which we found each other to have quite a bit to say on the subject (being a pair of highly opinionated old *******!). It was a great conversation, and one we thought was definitely worth having again (and then some!) and sharing with the world at large. (Well, at least that part of it interested in developing high level skills in Hypnosis and/or NLP.)

For those of you who don’t yet know James, he is a rare gem of the NLP world and much sought after trainer (NLP and Spiral Somatics) with a reputation for producing highly skilled students. A such, he knows a lot about what it really takes to get good with the skills and start making stuff happen with them.

So, what does it take to get really good with Hypnosis and NLP?

Is it about talent? Hard work? Smart work? Is there a formula? Can anyone do it?

Hello Hypno-people!

One of the reasons I love helping people to develop as hypnotists is becasue hypnosis is a skill-set and knowledge-set that has, without question, changed my life.

Before beginning learning hypnosis I really wasn’t getting very much of what I wanted out of life – stuck in a lousy dead end job at the mercy of a sadistic boss and being washed around by the tides of life! NOT GOOD!

But learning and coming to understand hypnosis (in it’s many and varied forms) changed all that, and for one simple but very clear reason – it massively increased my ability to influence both myself and the world around me!

When people think about Hypnosis Without Trance they think about hand-sticks, amnesias, hallucinations and the like, but really that stuff is just surface of things – the party pieces, if you like.

The place where hypnosis really makes a difference is EVERY SINGLE DAY – in every interaction with other people and every aspect of your thinking! But most people don’t know this… they only see the surface!

On Wednesday the 30th of November at 20:00 hours world time, I had the opportunity to partake in a live on-line conversation about Hypnosis as it relates to Personal Influence!

If you are in the UK you will have had the opportunity to watch the first of Derren Brown’s The Experiments series. This first episode was called The Assassin and took the form of an intricate experiment to find out whether a regular person could be ‘hypnotically programmed’ to become assassinate a public figure.

Now I already know that many Hypnotherpists are horrified that  Derren would do this (“it is going to frighten the public/give them the wrong idea”) but I really enjoyed the show and welcome the discussion it raises.

In the video I have discussed some of the key points regarding the overall concept.  It is not a complete breakdown and has avoided ‘spoilers’. There is a lot more to say about Derren’s excellent show (a return to form for Derren, IMO), much of which, I’m sure, will come out int the comments section below the video (If you have anything to say or ask, please do contribute to the discussion!)

ADDENDUM (23rd October 2011):

I want to be clear that I am NOT saying that ‘what you see is what you get’ with Derren’s show.  When I say that it is possible to ‘hypnotically’ influence someone to perform an assassination, I don’t necessarily mean ‘put them into trance and give them a post-hypnotic suggestion’! As most people who have followed this blog will know, I view hypnosis as something subtler than that which is presented by ‘old school’ models of hypnosis.

Derren achieved what he achieved within a particular context, much of what is presented is about PRESENTATION rather than getting results. If the CIA ever experimented with classic ‘induction based’ hypnosis to ‘programme’ assassins, I am absolutely sure they would have dropped it in favour of more effective methods that are better suited to their needs and contexts.

Remember, Derren is not just doing hypnosis, he is also presenting it… selling the hypnosis itself!

2nd ADDENDUM (24th October 2011):

To address concerns of ‘psychological manipulation’ through formal hypnosis…

It is true that people can be manipulated during a formal hypnosis ‘session’, but it is also true that they can be (and are) manipulated during any other human interaction.

The subtleties of human psychology and communication are always at play in every interaction we partake in, and in the ‘Assassin’ example it is not that Derren puts this guy into a ‘trance’ that makes him influenceable in this way.

The real ‘hypnosis’ here was the stuff going on underneath of the surface of formal hypnosis as presented.

And I want to make this absolutely clear:

The guy on the show was not ‘controlled’, he was INFLUENCED!

There is a difference. He was not a zombie, because hypnosis is NOT absolute mind control.

Real hypnosis is subtler – it is the culmination of the subtle communication and psychology stuff that lies beneath the surface and  makes the ‘formal processes’ work. And, of course, you can use any amount of that subtle communication and psychology stuff outside of the context of ‘formal hypnosis’.

Occasionally I drop in on a particular Facebook discussion group for hypnotists and see what kind of debates are raging (and there are always debates raging!)

One theme that seems to come up a lot is…

What’s best: Hypnosis or NLP?

Here’s a view on this that I already shared on FB, but I thought would be good to share here too and perhaps expand it a little:

“What I’m about to say seems so clear and  obvious to me, but apparently it is not to many others – part of the beauty of us all understanding things in our own unique way!

NLP and Hypnosis are just names that tell us nothing about what is really going on. Just different ways to cut the same pie. IMO of course.

Each one breaks down into sets of skills, many of which overlap.

Formal ‘hypnosis’ has the advantage of an overt ritual. Informal ‘hypnosis’/NLP/influence/communication juju/whatever has the advantage of flexibility of application – I have used this in many places and situations in which formal ‘trance’ (whatever that might be) rituals would be totally inappropriate and unwelcome.

There are pro’s and cons to all approaches, what fits best in the specific context and given the desired outcome is what is best.

This reminds me of the old debates on martial arts forums about which art is ‘best’. And who does best in ‘the cage’? The MMA (Mixed Martial Art) guys… the ones who mix it up and find the blend that works best for them in the context they need it.

I’ve heard the same debate in other areas too – “what’s best – Chiropractic or Osteopathy?” The truth is it depends upon the skills of the practitioner rather than the label they use to describe what they do.

In every field, it is those who try to keep their art ‘pure’ and rigidly define what it is and isn’t who end up losing the edge. Those who see what they do – see their skillset – as a ‘living’ thing to be explored and evolved always end up with the greatest range of flexibility and application. Like I say, seems obvious…”

I hope you will all forgive the slightly cocky tone to that but there is a point there that needs to be made. If you want fantastic skills, lose the boundaries around what you do and mix it up. Learn and apply whatever helps and whatever gives you the edge. Hypnosis/NLP/Mind-Skills/Influence/Coaching-Skills/Cognitive Linguistics/Hoodoo/JuJu/… whatever you call it and whatever works!

This is the future… make it yours!
