Hello HWTers!

*Video Below!*

But first… exciting news! Recently I have had a number of interesting conversations with U.S. Jeffrey Stephens. Jeff is a guy with a lot of passion about hypnosis and a lot to say on the subject – not to mention being a practitioner of phenomenal skill!

On the surface Jeff’s approach to hypnosis looks pretty different from HWT. It has a more ‘old school’ trance based look and feel, but if you get underneath that we have a lot more in common than one may first think.

And we have some differences!

Anyhows, I thought it would be good to introduce Jeff here, so I’ve hijacked a little of his video (see below) and arranged for us to have a live open conversation about hypnosis that you can all join in (either to ask questions or just to listen in). Also joining us in the conversation will be U.K. Hypnotherapist and Fighters Mind coach Alan Whitton. Al will be steering the conversation and insuring we answer even the most thorny questions.

The conversation will take place next Wednesday (7th September) at 6:30 P.M. International (7:30 P.M. British Summer Time) and Providing you listen via Skype or the Web there are no charges to listen or join in. You can get all the details below the video (along with other times for other timezones).

I hope you enjoy the video and join us for this LIVE conversation!

All the very best

James

P.S. If you are really into exploring hypnosis, please ‘LIKE’ ‘SHARE’ and generally spread the word on this – it is going to be great!

And if you are interested in attending Jeffrey Stephens’ UK Workshop on 7th (Evening Only) 8th & 9th of October 2011, you can BOOK HERE! I will be teaching Hypnotic Phenomena on the Friday evening, and Jeff will be teaching his ‘Power Hypnosis’ approach on the Saturday and Sunday.

Hello Hypno-types

Fear of failure is a massive thing. When present it stops us from playing, exploring and reaching our goals. This is nowhere more obvious than in Hypnosis!

How differently would you feel about ‘failure’ if you knew that it really did contain within it everything you needed for success. The trick is making it part of your FEEDBACK LOOP!

But how?

Well, this is what I am SHOWING in this video. In the main clip you will see me FAIL TWICE to get name amnesia, before utilising the feedback from the failures to get a success.

Watch the video below, and if you want more detail on getting essential feedback from failure, listen to the podcast below the video where I am talking about failure and feedback in life, poker and hypnosis.

This is a case study on the application of HWT to changework, presented by the incredibly creative hypnotist Roland Suljic. If you have any questions or comments, I know that both Roland and I would love to address them, so please do leave them in the comments section below! Over to Roland!

The case: Subject is a 38-year-old engineer with fear of blushing in awkward public situations. On the one hand he is rather easy to influence but tends to be skeptical on the other hand as long as doubts remain. The subject is highly fascinated by stage hypnosis and its possibilities.

The approach:

Step 1: Preframing and ‘Big Because’
Step 2: HWT Hand Stick as convincer
Step 3: Shift from ‘Not hypnosis frame’ to ‘hypnosis frame’
Step 4: Intervention (Desensitization)
Step 5: Ending the session

Step 1: Preframing and “Big Because”

The subject explicitly asked for hypnosis in the first place but then again showed signs of doubt whether or not hypnosis might be able to change his situation. As in the last case study, I explained him that he had not been born with this fear but had learned it in the past, while the inborn fears (of falling and loud noises) had been unlearned since birth which leads to the conclusion that all fears can be learned and unlearned. Next, I explained to him that the mind learns by associating and that his mind, at some point in the past, had associated the feeling of awkwardness to the feeling of fear.

I framed his problem as being comprised of two elements, i.e. the trigger and the physiological reaction, both linked together by the ‘A means B’ pattern of association which is typical for the mind. The goal of the whole hypnosis intervention was severing this connection by redefining the association in his mind.

His reactions indicated that he had bought in, so I suggested starting the process with a preliminary practice und the „not hypnosis“ frame.

Step 2: HWT Hand Stick as convincer

I did a standard HWT Hand Stick routine (as described in the HWT Mastery Programme) which took about half a minute until his left hand stuck to his leg. This experience finally let all remaining doubt dissipate and the subject was now fully convinced about me, my skills and the coming procedure.

Next, I opened a new loop by unsticking his hand and asking him to interlink his fingers. Then I stuck his fingers and palms firmly together and tested him. He was uncapable of seaparating his hands, so I could end up step 2 and proceed to next step.

Step 3: Shift from ‘not hypnosis frame’ to ‘hypnosis frame’

As step 2 was framed as ‘not hypnosis’ but the subject expected to be hypnotised, it was now necessary to change the frame from ‘not hypnosis’ to ‘hypnosis’. I did this my standard way by telling him:

“Now that you experience the power and control of your mind over your body without any induced trance whatsoever, you can begin to start feeling how much more powerful this control becomes as soon as you enter real hypnosis, can’t you?”

After eliciting a “yes” response from him, I told him to pick a point somewhere on his hands, suggested heavy eyelids and led him into a trance. Now, in order to start the real intervention, another ‘big because’ was necessary, so I told him:

“As you are very relaxed now, your mind is open to my suggestions and your thoughts and ideas. You can feel your hands still stuck together and you still cannot separate them, even if you try really hard. This is a representation for the situation that you wish to change. One hand represents the trigger, the other one represents the physiological reaction and when both come together you feel out of control. And as you begin to remember one very unpleasant situation of your past you start to feel out of control now as you did then. Nod when you feel it. [Waiting for signal]. That’s right. And as you feel that again your mind starts to associate it automatically with the stuck hands and corresponding feeling of being out of control as you begin to focus on that now. Nod when you feel it. [Waiting for signal]. That’s right. And now, as this situation of stuckness represents the situation that you wish to change in your mind, all we have to do is to unstick your hands, finger by finger, thus unlearning the unwanted behaviour while we teach your mind to associate something new to the feeling of awkwardness, thus creating a new behaviour. Now, focus on the relaxation in your body …”

I then intensified the feeling of relaxation before procedding to the next step.

Step 4: Intervention (Desensitization)

For those of you who don’t know the term: The principal idea of desensitization is imagining a fearful situation while the body is very relaxed. As anxiety and relaxation cannot exist in the body at the same time, the mind learns to associate relaxation with the mental images.

I combined this simple therapeutic principle with the HWT Hand Stick, using the hands as a representation for the situation in order to release it step by step, finger by finger. So, I ran the subject through a series of ten imagined situations, in which the level of akwardness of the imagined situation increased with every step. The central suggestion was always:

“As you see this situation in your mind’s eye you can feel the awkwardness related to it but your body remains as deeply relaxed and calm as it is now. And when you clearly feel this deep releaxation and calmness throughout your body although you are in this awkward situation, your right-hand pinkie unsticks and you regain control of it.”

This was the suggestion for the first scenario, the following unstuck the left-hand pinkie, the third released the right-hand ring finger and so on, in the order from pinkies to thumbs. [Hint: This order is essential for two reasons, so I do NOT recommend reversing the order. First reason: The pinkie is weaker than the thumb and is therefore connected to the less fearful scenarios in alignment with the symbolic language of the subconscious. Second reason (even more important): Very many people are physiologically unable to lift the ring finger without lifting the pinkie at the same time. Therefore, the pinkie must be released first.]

After running him through the tenth scenario (with the highest level of awkwardness), all fingers and thumbs were free, and I gave him the final suggestion:

“Now all your fingers are unstuck as your mind has linked a new physiological state to the situations, in which awkwardness may arise. From now on, whenever you feel the emotion of awkwardness, your body stays completely calm and relaxed, in fact, you are no longer capable of blushing in those situations because this old behaviour is unlearned. You can go back in your memories to a moment where the feeling of awkwardness was very high, finding that your body is relaxed and calm, but can try. Go on, try to feel something different from relaxation in this kind of situation, really try, but the more you try, the  stronger the relaxation becomes, and when you feel this, your palms finally unstick and you can separate your hands.”

I watched him trying until he separated his palms. Then I used an element of surprise and confusion by suddenly grabbing his hands and pulling them apart, saying ‘”Done! You’re free now. Open your eyes and look at me!” He slowly opened his eyes and looked at me in a confused way. I elicited a reality report by asking “What’s that like for you, being free and feeling that the old behaviour is gone now?” He answered “It’s kind of cool.” I fed that back, saying “Yes, it is kind of cool, and you can feel this kind of cool even more fully as your eyelids start to close again… becoming heavier and heavier …”

Step 5: Ending the session

Well, the ending was pretty standard, so there’s not much to report. I ended the trance, closed all open loops and verified that both hands had returned to normal.

That’s the report for this time.

Please DO comment and please DO give feedback. Maybe you have creative ideas about possible variations? I’d be happy to read them, and I’m sure that James feels just the same.

Roland.

Hello HWTers!

So… have you ever seen a hypnotist ‘stealing hypnosis’ from another hypnotist? Well, neither had I until last year at the Change | Phenomena conference when it happened to me!

I was delighted to witness the incredible Jorgen Rasmussen bringing up on stage a volunteer that I had previously ‘hypnotised’ several hours before, then rapidly re-orientating him into the original experience as a set up inducing visual hallucination. To me this was a true joy to watch… a thing of hypnotic beauty, from a true genius of hypnosis and changework.

Now, fortunately, you don’t have to just take my word for it, as Anthony Jacquin and Kev Sheldrake of Head Hacking Research (who organised the conference) have given me permission to show you the clip (heisted from their DVD of the event).

So check out the video and do share your thoughts and ask you questions in the comments section below!

If you are interested in training with Jorgen, he is here in the U.K. later this month!

And you can see the rest of his presentation at Change | Phenomena, along with my own, on the official Change | Phenomena 2010 DVD Set.

Use Your Curiosity and Make Hypnosis Easy!

by admin on March 17, 2011

Hi Folks

There seems to be a popular notion at the moment that to be a hypnotist you need to be ‘THE HYPNOTIST’ – i.e. you need to have the attitude that you are possessed of the power to bend the minds of your subjects to your will and that all will succumb. Now whilst it is true that this kind of attitude can work and pay dividends in many cases, it also has the power to backfire built into it. In addition to that, it often simply doesn’t suit peoples characters!

Well, breath a sigh of relief because there is another way, and it harnesses the power of something that I know you have in spades!

Watch the video, and my disembodied head will explain all!

And please leave me your feedback and/or questions in the comments section.

All the very best

James

(Please Note, if you are thinking this concept is the basis for The No-Fail Protocol, it is not… although it can be utilised within it.)

Hello Hypnosis Heads

On Sunday just gone I ran a small workshop teaching Changework applications for Hypnosis Without Trance. For me the day was made great those who attended – a fantastic group who asked the right questions and made the right observations at all the right time. Good people!

On the theme of Changework, I have a case study to share with you from Roland Suljic from Germany (Roland headed up the translation team for the German edition of Hypnosis Beyond the Trance Myth).  When Roland sent this to me, what really struck me was his creativity in application. Here it is in Roland’s own words:

The case:

A 25-year-old history student with a physical discomfort triggered by touching raspy, unpolished wood (e.g. an iced-lolly stick).

The Approach:

He knows that I am a hypnotist but he was unsure whether his condition could be changed because he remembered having it forever. As a setup I framed the discomfort as a very weak kind of fear and used the information that babies are born with only two fears: Fear of falling and fear of loud noise. Then I reminded him that the average adult possesses none of these fears any more but others instead which obviously shows that fears can be both unlearned and learned. After he had acknowledged this thought I explained to him that the brain is constructed by nature in a way to ensure quick learning, not slow learning. To emphasize this, I used the metaphor of a child that burns his hand and nearly immediately learns to avoid this kind of situation afterwards, which he acknowledged, too.

Now I had a sufficiently powerful ‘Big Because’ in order to begin the process. I knew that he strongly believed in the power of hypnosis (as most people know it), so I decided to utilize the hypnosis frame, but not to start with a classic induction but with a HWT ‘opener’ instead. I did a classic HWT hand sticking with him and then opened the next loop by telling him:

“Now that you experience the power and control of your mind over your body without any induced trance whatsoever, you can begin to start feeling how much more powerful this control becomes as soon as you enter real hypnosis, can’t you?”

After eliciting a clear and congruent “yes” from him, I opened the next loop by performing a focus-on-my-spiralling-finger induction, sending him into “deep hypnosis”, eyes closed and all.

Next, I told him that in order to get rid of the physical discomfort he would have to transfer it to me because I simply would not be able to take it away from him. I then explained him:

“In a moment, but not yet, I’m going to have your right hand hold my fist and I will bring your left hand in contact with a piece of raspy wood. You will then feel this feeling of discomfort wandering from your left hand through your left arm, through your shoulders, from there into your right arm and finally your right hand, from where it leaves your body and enters mine. This will be a bit uncomfortable at beginning, but you’re mentally and physically strong enough to endure it one last time. The feeling of discomfort will subside while you keep transferring it to me. When the discomfort will have subsided completely, you let go of my hand in order to signal me that the transfer is complete, because I simply cannot know as I can’t feel what you feel. So, you show me. If you’ve understood the procedure, nod your head.”

He nodded and we started. The reason for this kind of approach was his ongoing belief that getting rid of this condition would not be easy and would not come without a price.

The procedure worked exactly as described and suggested by me and took about 15 seconds until he let go of my fist. I then fractionated him so that could witness that my fist now contained the feeling of discomfort. I asked him to carefully place his hand near my fist in order to ensure that the feeling is there. He did it and told me that he could feel the vibrations emanating from my fist. Now, I had the commitment and consistency principle working for me and, at the same time, set a new belief in his belief system.

I then had him witness how I transferred this feeling of discomfort into a black box on a table, locking and sealing it there, completely separating it from his perception. In order to verify the success and to reinforce the belief that his condition was gone I aksed him to touch the piece of wood and to find that nothing unusual happened by doing so.

I elicited a reality report from him, fed him back his words and asked him whether he was more happy or more amazed that the feeling had gone now, at which point he told me “happy”. I fed this back, sent him back into ‘deep hypnosis’, closed the open loops and ended the session.

After emerging from ‘deep hypnosis’ he felt wonderful, relieved and could’t stop playing around with that piece of wood, now totally free from any feelings of discomfort.

So, let’s recap: First I created a Big Because for him and framed his condition appropriately. The HWT hand stick routine served as tangible demonstration of the power of his own mind. The next loop was opened by using his own belief system and the insinuation…

“If I can make your mind stick your hand to something without trance then I can influence you in any conceivable way by utilizing hypnosis.”

The following induction was, in fact, no more than a placebo in exact alignment with the subject’s beliefs, serving the purpose of both making the approach reasonable to the subject and boosting its power tenfold.

Please note the various presuppositions utilized in my quotations. They all serve the purpose to maintain the frame that this procedure is “piece of cake” and that its outcome is not in question whatsoever. Especially the misdirection/presupposition…

“This will be a bit uncomfortable at beginning, but you’re mentally and physically strong enough to endure it ONE LAST TIME”

…is very powerful because it leads the subject’s thoughts to their inner strength while the presupposition “one last time” slips through. If you want to utilize it, make sure that you deliver it in a rather casual way but with absolute certainty.

A beautiful piece of work and a beautiful write up! Roland can be contacted via his website Hypnoscience.
