Hypnosis Without Trance – Hypnosis for the 21st Century!

Eliciting Hypnotic Phenomena and Altering Realities in Everyday Waking States of Consciousness

Hypnosis Without Trance – Hypnosis for the 21st Century!

What People Are Saying...

Loading Quotes...

Hypnosis Without Trance is a new and contemporary approach to hypnosis that dispenses with the myth and mystery of ‘old-school’ trance rituals in favour of clear precision-based processes that allow for the elicitation of hypnotic phenomena without the need for ‘altered-states’.

If you are a hypnotist or student of hypnosis who wants to consistantly get clear and functional hypnotic phenomena without having to trust to luck or take any leaps of faith…

…you really need to know about Hypnosis Without Trance!

Hi, my name is James Tripp…

…and like 99% of other hypnotists (therapeutic and otherwise) I used to believe in an out-dated model of hypnosis that hindered my efficacy as a hypnotist.
What I believed was that hypnosis was all about inducing a special kind of altered state in people that would render them somehow more open to suggestion. So, like every other hypnotist I had learned to perform ‘trance inductions’ and watch for ‘signs of trance’ and when the subject was ‘there’ (or ‘under’) to deliver my hypnotic suggestions.

And this is how I approached hypnosis for my first couple of years as a hypnotist with varying levels of success. But…

…there were always certain things that never seemed to sit quite right with this approach for me.

Firstly there were the many experiences where people were showing all the classic signs of trance, yet not responding to the delivered suggestions. Then there was the question of why people should go into this special state just because you told them to ‘relax’/'go deeper’/'let go’ etc. And finally, when I started experimenting in ‘street hypnosis’ and performance contexts, the question of why people would so often respond wonderfully to delivered suggestions…

…without any trance induction and without displaying any signs of trance whatsoever.

With what I learned I eventually came to realise that the phenomena of hypnosis have nothing whatsoever to do with this special state called ‘trance’! Let me repeat that with a little more emphisis:

Hypnosis has got nothing whatsoever to do with ‘trance’!

(It is actually way cooler than that – a powerful process that utilises everyday human cognitive mechanisms in generating for the subject a new percieved reality! No trance, no ‘sleep’ no ‘going under’ anything.)

And what is more…

…the old trance model of hypnosis actually turned out to be a hindrance to doing hypnosis well.

So, driven by necessity (because I wanted to be the best hypnotist I could be), I set about rethinking my entire approach to hypnosis. I wanted to develop something that allowed me to do hypnosis with precision, would remove anything from the process that was unnecessary and would…

…maximise the chance of optimal success and completely eliminate any chance of failure.

And so, through research and experimentation, this is exactly what I did!

I have to say, the intention behind this was never to teach it to others, but more and more people (especially on the U.K. ‘street hypnosis’ scene) began taking an interest and encouraging me to publicly share my ideas. So in October 2009 I wrote my report Hypnosis Beyond the Trance Myth (sign up on this page if you want to a copy), and launched a blog (again, sign up for access) to share my ideas.

And I really had no idea how successful (and controversial) it would be.

SO WHAT IS HERE FOR YOU?

As I have mentioned, if you sign up on this page you get the report and access to the blog which is literally packed with video demonstrations and free tutorials – you can learn loads from this blog and many already have.

What I am aiming to do is open your eyes to a new way of thinking about, and a new way of doing hypnosis that will set you free from the uncertainty of the ‘old school’ approach (put them into a mysterious ‘trance’ state, give them suggestions and hope for the best), and instead put you firmly in the driving seat of of the hypnotic process.

The Hypnosis Without Trance approach has been created to be as effective an approach to hypnosis as can be – incorporating precision skills, acuity and flexibility with no-fail mechanisms to ensure that you remain in control throughout the entire hypnotic process.

And not only is it precise and powerful, but also highly respectful and empowering – making it ideal for both hypnotherapeutic and ethical performance applications.

If you are open-minded and interested in becoming your best as a hypnotist, I invite you to sign up on this page and get your copy ofHypnosis Beyond the Trance Myth. Additionally you will gain access to all the free video demonstrations and tutorials on the HWT blog. You can sign up in the boxes just below the video on this page.

I do hope that you will get as much fromHypnosis Without Trance as so many already have in the short time I have been sharing it. And if you know anyone else who may benefit from this highly regarded material, please do let them know!

All the very best,

James Tripp

Greetings James.
I have been enjoying your videos … great stuff. And I have a question.
You work to bypass the CF covertly. After getting their hand stuck and locked
to the table (head, etc.), does the question “what do you think/feel of that?”
not require them to get critical (evaluative) and thus no longer be bypassing the CF?
Obviously, seems to work okay in your videos … what am I not understanding?

James Tripp James Tripp December 21, 2010 at 6:10 pm

Hi J

Firstly, I do not ask that question.

What do you think about that” certainly would encourage someone to come out of the experience to analyse it. But “what is that like”, encourages them to go into more deeply to recover the information. Especially when you use other languaging surrounding it that takes them deeper into the experience.

For me, hypnotic language is about directing attention, bur it’s not just where attention is directed that’s important. it is also where attention is directed from. The key to hypnosis is taking the person onto an associated experience. Even if you dissociate them from their hand, for example, it is important to realise that what is more important is that you are associating them to an experience of being dissociated from their hand.

So, the way we use words counts, and there is a big difference between…

“what do you think/feel of that?”

…and…

“what’s that like, now… as it sticks more”

The first associates to analysis because it focuses on ‘YOU’ in relation to something else (the phenomena), so the person is being asked to perceive as themselves outside of the experience. You lead them to an objective position.

The second leaves the identity position out, taking the perceiver into the experience.

Hope that helps. I may even do a video on this later in the week!

Hello James,

I have received your DVDs and CDs Hypnosis without trance. I am watching them with much interest. It s a brilliant approach !
I have also watched The Manchurian approach from Anthony Jacquin.
I am wondering if it is possible to do some post hypnotic suggestions with your approach Hypnosis without trance.
For example, while a subject is hypnotized, you borrow his wallet and you put a playing card into it, let s say the 2 of hearts.
Then you give him the suggestion that in a moment, you will ask him to think of a card and he will think of the 2 of hearts.
Then you tell him to forget about these suggestions.
Then you wake him up and ask him to think of any card.
When he chooses the 2 of hearts, you tell him to look inside his wallet and there he finds the 2 of hearts.

Can you do this effect with your approach Hypnosis without trance -

Thanks for your answer, I wish you a happy new year !

you have a nice approach and view of what is hypnosis and what isnt.
If your continue with this, not only traditional hypnotists will realize that there are still several things to improve in our area and will want to get out of the box, but Hypnosis in general gonna takes new levels.

Have a great 2011 James.

Greetings James;
I agree that proving something is happening is very important to get clients to buy into change-will-happen-with-therapy.
Thus a hand stick is great for the first therapy session. But when you are doing a second or third session with a client
do you still do a hand stick to start things off?
Thanks,

Greetings J.

No, I don’t. I will often use ideodynamic work but set it up in different ways. I like to keep variety in what I do so as the client can’t predict what is going to happen next.

Much of the time I don’t actually do any overt hypnosis at all, utilising more ‘conversational’ techniques – really it all depends on the client and the approach that I think will work best for them.

Hope that helps!

Happy New Year. I just ordered your No-Fail Protocol from your pre-launch link. Ever since your first tease with this material I’ve been waiting for the opportunity to grab it. Somewhat fortuitously, I’ve been home sick with the flu these past two days (Silver lining. Yeah, baby.).

Of all the hypnotists I’ve discovered in my research, you and Jeff Stephens have had the most impact on my approach in this fascinating field. What I really appreciate is the elegance of your thinking. You have a knack for sussing out the process behind the seeming magic of hypnosis. And you can explain that process so it makes sense. In my estimation you are adding exceptionally useful nuances to the field. Keep it up.

James, I really have got a lot of great ideas out of the No Fail protocol DVD and CD program, one of the better ones I’ve encountered in the past 15+ years of being in the hypnosis field. You are definitely spot on that fear of failure is the primary limitation of most hypnotic practitioners and provide a workable way of overcoming it. Jim

P.S. – What is the source material for the Eccles quote on the nature of reality? I would like to read some of his work.

Yesterday I attended the HWT Changework Application Programme with my colleague. As two highly qualified and experienced hypnotherapists and NLP Master Practitioners we expected that we may learn one or two ‘nice to know’ techniques. What we didn’t expect was the quantum shift this programme can create. James is a personable and very skilled individual, he has produced a system that merges hypnosis, NLP, Clean Language, Clean Space and Hyperempiria amongst other disciplines into a highly effective therapeutic tool box. His execution of the techniques was a masterclass in elegance and effectiveness.
This is not a programme to attend if you are stuck in the trance induction and ‘hypnosis as a panacea’ school. James will challenge your preconceptions and demonstrate how his methods work effectively and without fuss. This is a must to add to your therapist toolbox. There’s a lot more to this guy than Hand Sticking and Hypnosis without trance.

I have been in the NLP / Hypnosis field since the 90′s, mostly private hypnotherapy some demos / seminars.
I have recently purchased your HWT program and the NFP after going through for the first time it has answered so many questions that I had in my own mind about hypnosis and what hypnosis actually is.
If you have time to answer the following question for me it would be wonderful.
What are the similarities / differences between your model of hypnosis and Anthony Jacquins AI Model ?
In a recent interview that Anthony did, he basically said that you were already doing much of what the AI Model is proposing.
Looking forward to your comments on this,
Thanks

Hi Tony

I really like the A.I. model as a FUNCTIONAL model of hypnosis… Ant and Kev have done a fantastic job! I am not yet sold, however, that it is a complete model of how hypnosis works ‘under the bonnet/hood’ (but then, I don’t think that what we call ‘hypnosis’ really is just one thing).

That said, what counts in my book is whether it helps people hypnotise well… and I really can’t see how it can’t.

I also have to take my hat of to the head hackers for actually doing some real thinking about hypnosis rather than just sticking with the old myths and models!

This is the way I like to practice, I have found since my first days in 1999 that the results are better for those who are not in an altered state of being. Also these days its more ethical and less likely to induce a client to state that anything untoward went on.

Hi Laurence

Given the appropriate skill level and knowledge of what you are doing and the context that you describe, absolutely. You have already had this person responding well, so why wouldn’t they respond again (unless they are not in the mood for it). All hypnosis works “just by talking to people” (or more specifically, communicating’ – the trick is, knowing what to communicate and how (communication works on many levels).

If the question here is really “would it work without induction?” then my answer is to point out that anything that works with induction works without – induction is at best a ritual that provides meaning, but there are other ways to provide that meaning.

Just to reiterate, hypnosis is not a special state and has nothing to do with a special state! Hypnosis is more like a psychological game – how well you play that game depends upon your skill levels and knowledge of the ‘mechanics’ of the game and strategy.

I’d just like to ask if you could address a topic that could be of interest to many people here in a future blog post.

Considering the subtle linguistic nuances that you’re dealing with in your work – how would you approach a person who maybe doesn’t speak English as a first language?

Is it possible or is (near) native fluency a pre-requsite for these techniques to work?

I ask as I live in Japan and would love to begin trying some basic effects (such as hand sticks), but I’m wary of the language barrier.

Thanks,
Damon

Hi James,

I Tried HWT recently and I am now a big fan. What I like most is that with traditional trance hypnosis I always have that niggling feeling that the subject is not ‘fully under’ and I have to keep testing and deepening. I call that the point of ‘epic fail’.
With HWT its is so obvious when they are responding (or not) when their hand becomes stuck, or a card is stuck in their fingers.

Whenever I feel confident, it is reflected in the subject and I am getting much better results.

Thank you,
Gordon.

Hi james.. Just want to greet you good job for your wonderful products. And just wanna ask, what mentalism books would you suggest for a beginner like me to learn the tricks that you had done in “no fail protocol”. The one where you force someone to pick a card then reveal it facing backwards in a deck of cards.. Thx

Hi Richard

Thanks for the feedback!

The answer to that question will depend upon what you mean by ‘mentalism’. If you mean reading body language, genuinely predicting behaviour, using verbal and nonverbal influence, then the answer is that you are already on that path!

If you meant the performance art of mentalism, then the story is a little different. As Derren Brown says, what he does fuses “magic, suggestion, psychology, misdirection and showmanship”. So, I would recommend, for a beginner (and most aptly related to mentalism)…

‘Mind Magic’: Self Working Mental Magic by Karl Fulves, Mind Magic by Marc LaMezma
‘Suggestion’: Wonder Words (audio set) by Kenton Knepper
‘Psychology’: The Alchemical Tools by Paul Brook
‘Misdirection’: Physical misdirection you will lean from magic, psychological misdirection from suggestion and psychology. So we have these covered.
‘Showmanship’: Magic and Showmanship by Henning Nelms

With that little lot and a little dedication you will be out and about blowing peoples minds in no time!

hey james thx for the quick response, ive been reading the book that you mentioned, specifically self working mental magic, im browsing the first half of the book and while its good and have done some of it.. i cant find the one you did where you forced someone to pick the 7 of hearts then reveal it facing backwards on the deck, i really want to learn that specifically because it really blew my mind.. thx james and wish you the best.

Hi Richard

That effect is a presentation of my own which combines hypnosis (all the foot sticking stuff) with a classic magic method. I am unwilling to reveal the method as it would be bad form (from a magicians perspective) to do so… although I’m sure if you did some smart Googling you could find out!

Hi James,
I want to learn self hypnosis as well.

Reply

James Tripp James Tripp November 3, 2011 at 2:01 pm

Hi Michael

Not my field and I’m not sure who to recommend.

For me, the best form of self hypnosis is learning to direct your own attention and resourcefulness through re-training your internal dialogue. You are giving yourself suggestions all the time, the question is what are you suggesting and how are you directing yourself?

Hi Wonderer

I have taught this in Poland, via a translator, and in that instance there didn’t seem to be any problem or barrier.

Hi Heleen

Interestingly, I was once planning to run specialist courses in hypnotic communication for manual therapists! The reason being is that I used to do manual therapy myself (founded in an Osteopathic approach).

As a physical therapist I found that the more I learned about hypnotic communication, the better my results got. In the end I just stopped doing the manual therapy and just did hypnosis! (Obviously, my client demographic shifted when I did this).

You can learn Hypnosis Without Trance through home study, but you would need to use a little imagination as to how to apply it to manual therapy as this is not the context to which the home study material is currently geared).

Hope that helps!

Hi James

Awsome stuff. Thank you for all the amazing videos. You are doing an amazing job.

Something I have been wondering about : Have you ever had an abreaction when using the HWT method, or is this limited to trance only?

Kallie

James Tripp James Tripp November 27, 2011 at 12:09 pm

Hi Kallie

Thank you for your feedback!

Regarding abreaction, when I was hanging with the ‘street hypnosis crowd’ I saw several instances of abreaction as a result of ‘sleep… deeper and deeper’ based hypnosis, and this was one of the things that kept me away from it. Using eyes open hypnosis and a ‘no-trance’ frame, however, I have never had an abreaction.

I don’t think that this is as a result of different states as such, but more a result of different framing.

Hi James
I studied and practised for fun, Hypnosis during the 70′s. I later applied “self-hypnotic suggestions” to myself after a serious shoulder joint operation and discovered the actual value in the hypnosis concept…like what you teach; the power of suggestion (post-hypnotic suggestions, auto suggestions, etc.).
I later stopped being interested in “tricks”, etc. and started to investigate and formulate ideas for myself on how to use the power of my mind to influence my thought trains, how my mind works, etc. Realizing this, I knew that I create my own realities, what I perceive and believe as the “truth”. As my new website blog suggests, reality is what you decide it to be, your mind believes it and instructs your body to obey.
So, to end, I fully support your concept of HWT, because that’s where the real value of Hypnosis lies…everyday applications that influence how you decide your day, or events, are going to turn out.
I subscribed to your report on HWT and will give feedback when I’ve read it! Cool stuff!

Hi James,

I am intending to book for your two day “Wizardry” course in London. I am interested in hypnosis, but have no previous experience. Would the course be too advanced for me?

Cheers,

Nick.

Hi James

I was just reading the first part of your ‘Beyond the Trance Myth’ article with fascination.

It got me thinking, are you able to get people to stop smoking or stop bad habits (binge eating, nail biting etc) without inducing trance? These are the day to day things I get so wondered what your perspective is on this.

Great article by the way and am reading with great interest :)

Hi David

The simple answer is ‘yes’. Speaking for myself, these days I rarely use formal ‘trancework’ with my clients.

The more interesting questions for me are “what is ‘trance’?” and “why should you need ‘trance’ to do anything?”

The answer to the first question there seems little consensus upon. The answer to the second? Well I haven’t asked that too much yet… but I think I’m probably going to start!

Hi James

Thanks for the quick reply.
Can you tell me whether you cover specifically things like smoking cessation or habit breaking in your course or do you cover more general info and let the person create their own way of doing these sort of things?

Kind regards

Hi David

The Hypnosis Wizardry Live course is really just about hypnosis and hypnotic phenomena, and not about changework or therapy.

I may, however, run another Transformative Facilitation course next year, if people are interested.

Hi James

I would definitely be interested in the Transformative Facilitation course if you did one.
Did I read that if you but your CD sets now, you would get these discounted when you signed up for the full course?
If you do offer that, I would look at purchasing the CD’s as prep material for your full course.

Thanks for all your replies

Hi James,

Over the last few years I have been reading both hypnosis, hypnotherapy, CBT, NLP and a number of other books in this ‘ball park’. I consider myself to have a reasonably well balanced idea of the ‘mechanics’ of hypnosis and facilitating change but I still lack that little something to actually be able to perform it. What would you suggest would be the next logical step in making this change in myself? Is it further home study or perhaps one of your workshops?

Carl

James Tripp James Tripp January 19, 2012 at 2:34 pm

Hi Carl

If I understand you, the change you want to make is to start doing changework?

The answer is to just start doing it. There is no way of getting ‘confidence’ in doing this kind of work without actually doing it, because confidence comes from experience.

You don’t have to be perfect before you begin. Just stay away from heavy therapy stuff and get busy doing some sessions.

First i’d like to say I’ve got all 3 of your packs, all of which i love.

However it leaves me with a problem.
a bit of history first
The tv show ‘mythbusters’ had a hypnosis special. The 2 main ‘tests’ were:
1) can you be made to do something out of your control(eg jumping up&down etc)
2) can hypnosis be used to improve your memory
in brief it comprised of a somewhat double standard way, for test 1 they visited a centre specialising in hypnotherapy(telling them to relax), but for test 2 they instead brought in a stage hypnotist who, although edited for standard tv legalislation reasons didn’t show in full, but from what they did show that he appeared to use a standard ‘arm-jerk’ induction.
Unsuprisingly the first test they ‘proved’ was a *myth*!!! (i.e. suggesting they use actors)
But the second was much more successful & a *fact*

I have explained to non-hypnosis-knowledged friends that hypnotherapy is very different from hypnosis.
In the past I could explain it with the jerk method for hypnosis vs lengthy deep relaxation for hypnotherapy.
However the HWT method adds a third option-hypnosis but without the jerk, so can you suggest how i can add that to my previous explanation.

Also secondly i wanted to know are there seperate names for hynotherapy & therapy by hypnosis?

Thanks & i’d also appreciate any thoughts on a tv show providing misleading information to the viewing public.

Hi Ian

To integrate stuff? I’ll borrow from NIKE here: just do it!

Take what you know, experiment and play.

And regarding the TV show – like human beings, TV shows always mislead. They have an agenda and a set of personal biases and this always guarantees a lack of impartiality.
